Statement:
My drawing ‘sunken garden’, 2022 is meticulously gridded with small segments coloured in bright pink, blue, red and green. These coloured cells are concentrated in the lower right hand corner of the drawing, and form an abstracted rose design. The title ‘sunken garden’ refers to the sunken rose garden in the Veale Gardens, on South Terrace. The drawing’s heavily gridded composition correlates to my interest in segmented and fragmented experiences of time, with the suggestion of a rose a symbol of generative and alterior modes of experiencing time in today’s fast paced and often overwhelming environment. As a city resident, the Veale Garden’s sunken rose garden is one of my favourite parts of the Adelaide parklands as it displaces the viewer from the bustle of the city.
