“I was inspired by Senior Kaurna man, Uncle Michael Kumatpi Marrutya O’Brien, at the Walk for Justice 2022 when he performed a Welcome to Country ceremony at the Park Lands. I loved the wisdom of his words and the stories he told, which inspired me to research more about Adelaide. In a podcast he featured on, he speaks about the Kaurna people and how the landscape of Adelaide had shapes of Kangaroos and Emus embedded into the surrounds. He is such an inspiring man, full of knowledge and wisdom, and I am honoured to have permission to paint his portrait.”
